What is the PAL?
The Plainville Athletic League is a non-profit youth sports organization that offers baseball for boys age 4 to 18 (Hockomock Diamond League) and fast pitch softball for girls age 4 to 16. The league is proud of its policy to never turn a child away due to a family's inability to pay. Since 1955, the PAL has been run by parents and volunteers. The league is not funded by the town and therefore relies upon the generosity and support of its member families and local businesses in the community. League affiliations include Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth Baseball as well as PONY, ASA, and Cal Ripken Softball.
We offer baseball and softball activities year round. Our spring recreational season provides all interested children an opportunity to get active, have fun, meet new friends and establish the camaraderie that makes Plainville a family community. Baseball and softball are both affiliated with the Hockomock Summer League. Baseball also participates in the Little North Attleboro League and the developmental Mansfield Fall League, focused on teaching fundamentals to all ages and skill levels. Collectively, the PAL has an estimated twenty-five teams participating in our summer and fall programs to complement the approximately 30 or more teams playing in the spring. Dedicated volunteers from both baseball and softball programs also offer their time for a number of skills clinics and pitching clinics that are offered throughout the winter to keep our boys and girls playing and honing their skills in preparation for the spring season. The PAL hosts multiple baseball and softball tournaments during the spring and summer as well.
Our main facility features a clubhouse/snack bar with outdoor tables, four irrigated and lighted playing fields (three with full fencing) with enclosed dugouts, electronic scoreboards and elevated scorers boxes, a pavilion, three batting cages, two playgrounds, and three storage buildings. An extensive league-funded renovation has been completed on Lewicki Field, which has been modified to benefit our instructional and farm programs.
The PAL also believes in giving back to the community which has been supporting us since 1955 through various programs. Our annual food drive, PAL Cares a TON, benefiting the Plainville United Methodist Church's Living Bread food pantry, has contributed over 15,000 pounds of food and household supplies, with an additional 5000 pound target for 2014. The PAL is actively involved in raising awareness of breast cancer through the "PAL Goes Pink" program, raising funds to support local family's efforts to walk in the Avon Walk for a Cure event. We proudly offer up to $3000 in scholarships to PAL alumni graduating from area high schools each year to further pursue their college educations or post-graduation studies. The recipients of these scholarships are students who spent many years growing up through the PAL programs and feel those experiences helped shape them as the young men and women to lead our community into the future. To date, over $27,000 has been raised and awarded to 39 recipients. We also teamed with our local Girl Scout troop to initiate a successful recycling program.
We are located on George Street/Everett Skinner Road in Plainville. We encourage any interested party to stop by during the season to catch a game, lend a hand, or both!
